Safety has not moved nearly as quickly as designing cars that can get consumers to places faster as the U.S. auto industry moved forward quite a bit. A large number of fatalities in commuter traffic accidents caused Congress to pass a law in 1959 requiring vehicles to have seat belts in them. It has shown within the numbers that protection technology in cars is more advanced. According to the Transportation Department, there were fewer traffic deaths on United States motorways in 2009 than there have been in six decades.
Traffic Safety deaths go down due to tougher laws that caused safety advancements
Seat belts, airbags, more efficient body construction, stability control and other high-tech crash sensors have contributed to fewer traffic deaths, but tighter enforcement of drinking and driving and distracted/fatigued driving laws should not be discounted, writes the Associated Press. Since 1950, traffic deaths are at all time low numbers in 2009 with a decrease of 9.7 percent to 33,808. By comparison, 37,423 deaths related to highway accidents occurred in 2008. That’s 1.13 deaths per million miles driven in 2009, compared with 1.26 the previous year. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood proudly exclaimed that the latest report “shows that America’s roads are the safest they’ve ever been.”.
It is as a result of the recession
During American recessions, freeway fatalities drop in history. The recession of oil shortages in the late 1970s/early 1980s, numbers went down also. Something similar happened within the 1990s. It was about the same. More people used public transportation or stayed at home as a result of the cost of driving. Fewer vehicles on the road will naturally decrease the number of commuter traffic fatalities. The Transportation Department shows how this is not the case. In 2009, there was a .2 percent increase in miles traveled by motorists.
Law wants to stop distracted driving
It is always a bad idea to focus on cell phones or texting rather than the road. Seems like like more and more legislation enforcement are working to stop this from happening. United States of America roads could be safer, reports AP who spoke to LaHood, if every state were to adopt these laws against driving distracted.
