Chilean miners rescued by NASA

Everyone within the world was wondering what would happen with the stuck miners in Chili. It was established early on that some miners in the Chilean mine had survived, but it would take a long time before they could be rescued. Officials and advisers from NASA are dispatched to the site to offer any advice they can to the miners and rescue crews. Months might be required to get them. It is going slow although a rescue shaft is being dug.

NASA makes a trip to Chile

The Chilean mine disaster now has National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials. The miners are trapped 2,200 feet underground. NASA engineers and scientists are responsible for getting supplies to the miners. The only things that can be given to the men come through three four inch wide tubes, reports the Washington Post. This has to receive supplies to 33 men. One tube pumps in oxygen, another sends supplies, and also the third tube for video conferencing, so miners can communicate with loved ones. The problem is how to get everything they will need down a four inch wide tube.

Advice

The Washington Post most recently conducted an interview with Jerry Linenger, a previous NASA astronaut. Linenger was the sole American trapped aboard the Mir space station in 1997, when a fire trapped him and two cosmonaut colleagues in space for four months. Linenger’s advice to the men was that they have to stay busy, however not obtain their hopes up. Depression and despair happen from time to time. This is only if expectations are too high and aren’t met. He also advised that miners shouldn’t let one person become a leader as they have to be involved in teamwork.

Camp Hope is an option

There is a camp made up of rescue workers, family members and support staff that is called Camp Hope. The mining company may have to go bankrupt soon as it is hoping for some forgiveness. There are no wages for the contained miners. It won’t pay for the wages.
